How a Cruise Changed the Way I See Watches

It’s never too late to learn. The older we get (or as my wife and I say — classic), the more time becomes an incredible teacher.

Learning is always Time Well Spent. This is where my watch-collecting journey begins — and you’re invited to walk with me.

The Spark at Sea

Inspiration came from a cruise — a milestone birthday trip for my wife on Virgin Voyages. On day two, the shops opened and we went hunting for a gift. We met Marko and Jainer, who walked us through lab-grown diamonds, Roberto Coin, and then… watches.

“Be careful… collecting watches can become addictive.” — Jainer, during a 15-minute history of watches mini-class

The ship hosted short classes (yes, with complimentary drinks) to educate guests and make the process fun. One session covered the history of watches. The warning above landed — and then the obsession started.

I watched a couple weigh which pre-owned Rolex to add to their collection. I saw the light bounce off a dial from Norqain and felt that pull. Day after day across our eight-day cruise, I found myself back in the shops, asking questions, soaking up brand presentations, and wanting more.

Collector’s Take

That week lit the fuse.

Surface-level info wasn’t enough. I didn’t want only second hand knowledge. I wanted the full story — mechanics, history, design choices, and the unique quirks that make this hobby such a rewarding rabbit hole.

Here’s the truth: you don’t need a watchmaker’s bench or a vault full of grails to start this journey. You need curiosity and a willingness to learn.

Closing Punch

This blog isn’t about flexing wrist shots. It’s about learning together — studying horology, exploring brands you know, brands you’ve never heard of, and brands you should know.

Time is ticking. Let’s make sure it’s Time Well Spent.
